The Grand Kadooment Day Party People

On Monday 5th August 2013, people in Barbados won’t have a case of the Monday blues. It’s time for Grand Kadooment Day.

Grand Kadooment is the festive finale of the Crop Over, the island’s biggest festival that lasts for five weeks, where a masquerade parade closes the season. The festival is held in Bridgetown and it’s considered one of the biggest and most colourful events in the whole of the Caribbean celebratory calendar.

As the events for Crop Over take place over five weeks, you can combine it with a holiday at an all-inclusive resort such as Couples Barbados.

The Grand Kadooment Day Party People

History

This event dates back to the 18th century. In the 1780s, the island of Barbados was the largest producer of sugar in the world. At the end of the sugar cane harvest with the crop over, the island’s inhabitants held a huge festival to celebrate their hard work in bringing in the crop.

What Happens

Kadooment Day is always held on the first Monday of August. The whole island gets taken over by the party spirit. The day commences with the man and woman who have harvested the most crops throughout the season being crowned ‘King and Queen of the Crop’.

Revellers can expect a mix of live folk music, traditional dancing, carnivals and markets. Visitors to the island are welcome to join in too. Elaborately costumed bands parade along the streets accompanied by party people and the sounds of calypso. The designer with the best costume is named ‘Designer of the Year’. Children can participate in the Kiddies Kadooment, donning cute costumes and walking along with their friends and dancing to the music.

At the end of the parade route, there is more music, food, and fun. The festival ends with a huge fireworks display.

Who Goes

The whole island celebrates Kadooment Day. Locals and visitors are all welcome. Even Bajan superstar singer Rihanna has been spotted among the party crowd!

There’s plenty of fun for one and all. If you missed out on this year’s spectacle don’t worry, there’s always next year. So, see you at the Grand Kadooment Day in 2014!
